In 2010, Warwickshire and Worcestershire Museum Services' popular "Museum on the Move" bus was fitted out with an exhibition on memory and the workings of the brain. A simple trackball-controlled computer system was installed, to deliver audio files of the reminiscences of local people.

The screen looked a bit plain, though. They decided they needed to put it in a case which would reflect reminiscence and nostalgia. That's where I came in. After some discussion, we settled on an idea inspired by Steampunk. This science fiction movement creates fantasy worlds which include advanced technology visually reminiscent of Victorian England.

Thus, the insane idea of a Victorian computer was born. I greatly enjoyed the experience of veneering in oak, adding inlay, then applying brasswork, studs and fancy handles. I rarely get to create anything quite so - er - tasteful. Naturally, it's provided something of a talking point among exhibition visitors.
